It&#8217;s not easy trying to remember what happened 4 months ago even with my notes, bearing in mind I can hardly remember what happened yesterday! I must also point out that this is a really bloated blog post that probably goes against all web conventions but it&#8217;s just what I want to write, for me, my family and hopefully some others who want to reminisce about RIAT or just the chronically bored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The run up to RIAT 2025 was rushed and fraught like everything these days although already I feel like July was a much simpler time compared to now. We tried to engage with the build up and when we got the notification fairly late in proceedings that a B1 was going to be in the flying display I really started to get the fizz. We were staying at Kempsford as always and the drive down was ok apart from the usual rinsing at the services. When we got to the campsite the weather was glorious but I wasn&#8217;t in the zone yet, the older you get the harder it is to forget about everything and achieve holiday + airshow mode. Some Thursday PDA demos helped and then after getting the tent up we took a stroll to the marquee and on the way got talking to a family who were there with a classic VW camper van and the airshow coversation began to flow. Out came all our favourite airshow memories, and various shared experiences and in no time the final piece of the RIAT jigsaw was in place &#8211; I was airshow ready! We grabbed some tea, a \u00a316 burger each &#8211; very tasty but yeah, \u00a316 &#8211; that&#8217;s pretty steep! I washed mine down with some no-alcohold beer as this was my first ever teetotal RIAT &#8211; no more rocking out in the marquee until last orders then spewing up in a chemical toilet next day :-\/  Whilst at the beer tent we saw more PDA displays from 2 x Spitfires (my son loved these)  the Atlantique, an F16 and the G91 &#8211; happy days, never seen  an Atlantique or a G91 before<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we got back to the tent it was late-ish but our neighbours were running a generator which concerned me somewhat, trying to sleep with that racket! I went to ask what time they&#8217;d be switchting it off and we got chatting, they were absolutely sound and I always swung by to say hello after each show day to have a catch up and for my son to say hello to their dog Ralph!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Friday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Showtime! I awoke about 07:30, tried to undo my rigid limbs with 20 minutes of yoga then knocked up a tea and some porridge whilst those 2 slept. I also made a flask of real coffee in a pitiful attempt to save money! The walk in from Kempsford blue was hassle free and I was pretty much straight in and no messin&#8217; as Johnny Red used to say. Once showside I was on a mission to get a shopping list of U2 patches from <a href=\"https:\/\/runway25.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Runway 25<\/a> for my good friend Wilf. Being somewhat on some sort of spectrum I felt under pressure to get them and simply couldn&#8217;t settle until I got my task complete &#8211; get out of my way people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"260\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/airshowblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Verve-Gif-Gauntlet.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-794\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not into patches, and never will be as they&#8217;ll just sit in the loft gathering dust or worse I&#8217;ll sew them (badly) onto a bomber jacket and look like a plane-spotting pearly king. I missed the Swedish Gripen. Then I got a call from my partner to say we&#8217;d forgotten our child&#8217;s ear defenders so I had to go to a different stand and queue for another 30 minutes to get them before marching over to Red to meet them both and handover the goods. I couldn&#8217;t complain too much as they were half way through a one and a half hour wait for the boy to sit in a plastic F35. I don&#8217;t know why, sometimes it just happens that way &#8211; you come away from an airshow with some really unexpected favourites! Complete tangent but&#8230;.when I first uploaded this Portugese helo image the colour went to complete shit! Bit of Googling suggested I had to save image with sRGB IEC61966-2.1 colour profile and lo and behold it preserved the colours I was originally seeing in Photoshop&#8230;.mostly. Did it ruin photography? No&#8230;but each year the price of FRIAT goes up whilst the benefits get eroded. &lt;<em>For 2026 they&#8217;ve ditched our reserved seats and made us go through a free for all again but added more tiers to the grandstand to compensate for the interrupted view caused by GA ticket holders now plonked in front of FRIAT. Surely though means the lower tiers still have an interrupted view?!<\/em>&gt;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finnish f18 display polished as always, Wedgetail cancelled but then it&#8217;s the Red Arrows which I watch with partner and boy in the rectangle in front of RIAT. Say what you want about them but for most kids (and many adults!) they are the highlight of any event they appear at and this was no exception, my little boy was so happy to see them. I do a lot of stuff in the great outdoors and this seemed a worthwhile gadget to have as not only does it filter bacteria but it also removed viruses &#8211; most portable water filtration solutions do not. Crucial for RIAT, it also removes the ghastly chlorine taste from the free bowser water meaning I didnt have to keep buying the \u00a33 or \u00a34 bottles of water. A Grayl is not cheap at \u00a390 but a long weekend at RIAT has recouped a big chunk of that! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After my chicken nuggets in spicy Korean sauce (nice) I kicked back and watched the Wedgetail and Red Arrows flypast  &#8211; nice to see but not massively my thing. I think my favourite of these was the 747 in BOAC markings in formation with the Reds several years ago. There then followed the BBMF Lanc which flew over the crowd, I tend to forget they are allowed to do that. We then had a great display from the RAF Typhoon but in all honestly I was more excited to see the G91. Mid to late 80s I got a collection of 4 Matchbox models themed as &#8216;Nato&#8217;. There was some 1\/76th paratroopers, Harrier Gr3, possibly a Dassauly Mystere IV and last but certainly not least the little G91 which I really enjoyed, it may have had sharkmouth decals &#8211; always a winner for me! Anyway, the G91 display itself was pretty basic (not a complaint!) but it was just great to see one in the air. In fact I&#8217;ve just remembered I have a picture of said model, along with a Matchbox Lancaster and Matchbox He115 in my 1980s bedroom! Probably not and again I find myself thinking I must attend airshows wherever possible now because in 10 &#8211; 20 years time I feel there will be very little in the way of classics on the circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back at FRIAT I watch the Spanish Typhoon, Polish F16 (pilot of which was tragically lost in a crash later that year) and the Swedish Blackhawk again before meeting up with those 2 again. I volunteer to go get lunch whilst they sheltered from the rain and it takes about an hour to get served but as always the food is pretty good. Just mega expensive! After this I rush back to FRIAT to shoot the U2 then come back out to do some more wanderings. I visit the Airfix stand to discover it is full of kids, and things mainly aimed at kids. How disgustingly unfair! \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of kids, I then trooped back up to green to join them in Family enclosure, I can still feel it now the twinge of sadness that he won&#8217;t be going back in but onwards and upwards! Overall I enjoyed it as ever but the chip, chip chipping away at FRIAT does nark me. The line up initially didn&#8217;t seem to have a standaout for me but the Atlantique, Blackhawk, Grob, G91 and Galaxy made it in the end. As a family experience we loved it, my boy came away with some fantastic memories and it has maintained his interest in aviation. However the cots is becoming a problem. We&#8217;re fortunate in the fact that we can afford to do full RIAT (just) but it really must be a struggle for some families now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do we think about next year? A new CEO, a new FRIAT stand arrangement, people getting charged \u00a315 per day to park. No doubt more troubling news will come out as we get nearer and nearer to the actual weekend. &lt;<em>as I type this now there is much speculation as to whether or not RIAT 2026 will happen due to the war in Iran<\/em>&gt; And the price, f*ck me. By March we&#8217;d forked out \u00a3280 for Kempsford camping, \u00a3330 on my FRIAT and \u00a3190 on their tickets so we are now at \u00a3800 for a family of 3 to spend 4 nights at a campsite and go to an airshow.
