Thursday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is now the back end of November (in fact it’s now early early April and still trying to finish this) and finally I have time to sit down and start a blog post on our RIAT 2025 experience. It’s not easy trying to remember what happened 4 months ago even with my notes, bearing in mind I can hardly remember what happened yesterday! I must also point out that this is a really bloated blog post that probably goes against all web conventions but it’s just what I want to write, for me, my family and hopefully some others who want to reminisce about RIAT or just the chronically bored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The run up to RIAT 2025 was rushed and fraught like everything these days although already I feel like July was a much simpler time compared to now. We tried to engage with the build up and when we got the notification fairly late in proceedings that a B1 was going to be in the flying display I really started to get the fizz. We were staying at Kempsford as always and the drive down was ok apart from the usual rinsing at the services. When we got to the campsite the weather was glorious but I wasn’t in the zone yet, the older you get the harder it is to forget about everything and achieve holiday + airshow mode. Some Thursday PDA demos helped and then after getting the tent up we took a stroll to the marquee and on the way got talking to a family who were there with a classic VW camper van and the airshow coversation began to flow. Out came all our favourite airshow memories, and various shared experiences and in no time the final piece of the RIAT jigsaw was in place – I was airshow ready! We grabbed some tea, a \u00a316 burger each – very tasty but yeah, \u00a316 – that’s pretty steep! I washed mine down with some no-alcohold beer as this was my first ever teetotal RIAT – no more rocking out in the marquee until last orders then spewing up in a chemical toilet next day :-\/ Whilst at the beer tent we saw more PDA displays from 2 x Spitfires (my son loved these) the Atlantique, an F16 and the G91 – happy days, never seen an Atlantique or a G91 before<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we got back to the tent it was late-ish but our neighbours were running a generator which concerned me somewhat, trying to sleep with that racket! I went to ask what time they’d be switchting it off and we got chatting, they were absolutely sound and I always swung by to say hello after each show day to have a catch up and for my son to say hello to their dog Ralph!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Showtime! I awoke about 07:30, tried to undo my rigid limbs with 20 minutes of yoga then knocked up a tea and some porridge whilst those 2 slept. I also made a flask of real coffee in a pitiful attempt to save money! The walk in from Kempsford blue was hassle free and I was pretty much straight in and no messin’ as Johnny Red used to say. Once showside I was on a mission to get a shopping list of U2 patches from Runway 25<\/a> for my good friend Wilf. Being somewhat on some sort of spectrum I felt under pressure to get them and simply couldn’t settle until I got my task complete – get out of my way people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not into patches, and never will be as they’ll just sit in the loft gathering dust or worse I’ll sew them (badly) onto a bomber jacket and look like a plane-spotting pearly king. But I have to say their U2 related patches and other paraphenalia were rather fetching so I’m going to link back to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mission out of the way I made way my way over to FRIAT where I felt compelled to queue for ages to get some show t-shirts as they can sell out early, especially size L. I missed the Swedish Gripen. Then I got a call from my partner to say we’d forgotten our child’s ear defenders so I had to go to a different stand and queue for another 30 minutes to get them before marching over to Red to meet them both and handover the goods. I couldn’t complain too much as they were half way through a one and a half hour wait for the boy to sit in a plastic F35. My God he was beaming when he got in though!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to FRIAT in time to watch the Rivet Joint flypast, Finnish F18 take off, followed by a promising RAF Typhoon display cut short by going tech, German NH90, a spirited Polish F16 display, Slovak PC-9 and then my first ever Blackhawk display in the shape of a Swedish example. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There followed another first for me, a Portugese EH101 in a very fetching green and sand camo and I really got the fizz of this machine. I don’t know why, sometimes it just happens that way – you come away from an airshow with some really unexpected favourites! Complete tangent but….when I first uploaded this Portugese helo image the colour went to complete shit! Bit of Googling suggested I had to save image with sRGB IEC61966-2.1 colour profile and lo and behold it preserved the colours I was originally seeing in Photoshop….mostly. Every day is a school day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2025 saw the much maligned changes to the FRIAT stand location implemented, pushing it further back from the display. Did it ruin photography? No…but each year the price of FRIAT goes up whilst the benefits get eroded. <For 2026 they’ve ditched our reserved seats and made us go through a free for all again but added more tiers to the grandstand to compensate for the interrupted view caused by GA ticket holders now plonked in front of FRIAT. Surely though means the lower tiers still have an interrupted view?!<\/em>>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finnish f18 display polished as always, Wedgetail cancelled but then it’s the Red Arrows which I watch with partner and boy in the rectangle in front of RIAT. Say what you want about them but for most kids (and many adults!) they are the highlight of any event they appear at and this was no exception, my little boy was so happy to see them. So was I, of course but I was especially excited when the Armee de l’air E3 put in a flypast before landing \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the E3 had landed we took a wander down to red to investigate more statics. It was good to get close up to the Atlantique, a real underrated classic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the forces row where I saw a familar shape of what I know as a Wombat but in this instance was a 120mm L2 BAT gun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know this gun because I had a Dinky toy of it and naturally asked the guy if he had any giant matchsticks to fire out of it, wag that I am. There was also plenty of armed forces stalls to look around and they were all really friendly and keen to show my son around their various tools of the trade etc. We headed back up through the statics via a model shop (Italeri Civilian Ju86 purchased for nostalgia reasons) a trip through an RAF A400, past the Breguet Atlantique again (prounounced Breggay by the commentator – is this correct?) which really was an absolute standout item for me this weekend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also got my first look at the Grob520T, an absolute beast of a long-endurance, high-altitude reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft which many people would no doubt describe as ugly but in a world of F35s and lookalike UAVs this thing is a refreshing change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airshow day one boxed off we returned to Kempsford to kick around the marquee for a bit and get some food whilst engaging in excited airshow chatter with other campers. Whilst we were there the campsite was treated to a very evocative flypast from the BBMF Lancaster. Of note, my Apple Watch recorded that I had walked 10 miles on this day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

More excited Kempsford airshow chit chat with fellow campers. It’s kinda like the Walking Dead where potential recruits to the group were asked standard Qs: “How many walkers have you killed?” :”How many people have you killed” but here it’s: “Where you from?” :”What’s been your favourite aeroplane so far?” : “How many people have you killed?”. Entering the airshow is again a doddle, probably helped by the pouring rain but in general I have to admit the lack of dedicated FRIAT entrance isn’t causing the issues I expected. Now that Green is open I head down that end and shoot the statics including the awesome B1 and take a walk through the C5, another highlight of the show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This thing truly is enormous and I can’t wait to bring my boy back to see it. I head back to FRIAT and there is no sign of Tony and Neil who have had the seats next to me for the past few years! I shoot the Danish F16, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I shoot the Finish F18 with lots of vapour, NH90, Italian Typhoon, CASA, and Gripen E. This new version of the Gripen is an impressive machine and looks terrific in it’s semi-splinter camo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I leave FRIAT and meet those 2 to go do some more statics etc. I try and dedicate a lot of today as family time and again pay \u00a342 to join them in the Family enclosure on and off throughout the day. It’s only recently that I’ve realised that RIAT 25 is probably the last time we’ll use it which is bittersweet as although it was quite expensive it had become tradition, moving away from that marks a developmental transition for my little boy in the same way I’ll miss that he is no longer so keen on the ‘cute’ story books at home. After a while me and the boy took a walk into Green so I could show him the C5. F*ck me, I’d already been in it that morning but on my 2nd visit I still couldn’t get over the size of it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst out on the statics the U2 comes in for a touch and go and I think this is the first time I’ve managed to see one with the big teardrop fairing on its back so I gets some nice shots of it with the crowd in which I find can sometimes add to an airshow pic, not detract. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is followed by the RAF P8 flypast and then a star performance from the Atlantique, an absolute highlight for me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will I ever see one again?! Not sure so I went bonkers taking photos of it. Shortly after this my boy brings me some little flowers he’s picked off the grass – what a beautiful gesture! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next it’s the Spanish Typhoon and I’ve made a note that this year this and all the other Typhoon displays have been really good<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of really good, this year I brought my Grayl Ultrapress water filter with me. I do a lot of stuff in the great outdoors and this seemed a worthwhile gadget to have as not only does it filter bacteria but it also removed viruses – most portable water filtration solutions do not. Crucial for RIAT, it also removes the ghastly chlorine taste from the free bowser water meaning I didnt have to keep buying the \u00a33 or \u00a34 bottles of water. A Grayl is not cheap at \u00a390 but a long weekend at RIAT has recouped a big chunk of that! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After my chicken nuggets in spicy Korean sauce (nice) I kicked back and watched the Wedgetail and Red Arrows flypast – nice to see but not massively my thing. I think my favourite of these was the 747 in BOAC markings in formation with the Reds several years ago. There then followed the BBMF Lanc which flew over the crowd, I tend to forget they are allowed to do that. We then had a great display from the RAF Typhoon but in all honestly I was more excited to see the G91. Mid to late 80s I got a collection of 4 Matchbox models themed as ‘Nato’. There was some 1\/76th paratroopers, Harrier Gr3, possibly a Dassauly Mystere IV and last but certainly not least the little G91 which I really enjoyed, it may have had sharkmouth decals – always a winner for me! Anyway, the G91 display itself was pretty basic (not a complaint!) but it was just great to see one in the air. In fact I’ve just remembered I have a picture of said model, along with a Matchbox Lancaster and Matchbox He115 in my 1980s bedroom! You may also spot some Take Off magazine binders….and original Action Man wallpaper \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rainy day. Up at 6:30 am straight into some yoga. I’m not some new age dullard, I just have to keep on top of my stretching otherwise my chronic pain gets even more chronic :-D. Post workout I hit the Kempsford facilities for a full fat coffee and croissant and head into FRIAT just in time for the 08:15 Canon talk which I found really informative – 2 key things I took away. 1) One of the Canon guys shoots airshows full manual like me – nice to know I’m not the only one and 2) Thrust thine fingers into one’s lens hood for extra IS! 3) Every f*cker seems to have moved on to mirrorless!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After this I paid a visit to the Forces Tailor stall (ace little camping gadget section inside it!) and then the General Atomics stand to see the pretty impressive mock up of the YFQ-42A unmanned fighter jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wonder if we’ll ever see something like this perform a flypast at an airshow? Probably not and again I find myself thinking I must attend airshows wherever possible now because in 10 – 20 years time I feel there will be very little in the way of classics on the circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back at FRIAT I watch the Spanish Typhoon, Polish F16 (pilot of which was tragically lost in a crash later that year) and the Swedish Blackhawk again before meeting up with those 2 again. I volunteer to go get lunch whilst they sheltered from the rain and it takes about an hour to get served but as always the food is pretty good. Just mega expensive! After this I rush back to FRIAT to shoot the U2 then come back out to do some more wanderings. I visit the Airfix stand to discover it is full of kids, and things mainly aimed at kids. How disgustingly unfair! \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of kids, I then trooped back up to green to join them in Family enclosure, I can still feel it now the twinge of sadness that he won’t be going back in but onwards and upwards! It was never particularly brilliant in there but it’s very relaxed compared to FRIAT or the main crowdline and it’s just nice to watch the world go by in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I shot the Finnish (?) F18 from there, cracking display, then went back to Green statics with those 2….I just couldn’t resist going back on the cavernous C5!! I also went on the Learjet C-21A with boy – again, I take these opportunities now, I may never get the chance to go on one of these ever again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also took the opportunity to fanny around trying to take some arty shots with my iPhone with the puddles created by the recent downpours in the foreground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

but realised my 100-400mm had fogged up inside so I traipsed back to FRIAT to hire a 100 – 400 Mk2 for the last hour or so – that lens hire came in very handy! Whilst in the stand I remembered to get a pic of Waldorf and Statler…sorry I mean Tony and Neil… who have sat next to me for the past few years now and are always great company. Hopefully I will find them again in the new seating plan! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back through my pics I do see some improvement with the new lens but I do not see justification to buy one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so we find ourselves at that poignant, almost visceral Sunday moment when you pack up all your stuff, do one last pass on some statics then troop out past the RIAT staff and through the Blue gate. Along the track to Kempsford with a heavy heart knowing it’s another year to the next show day. Sure you got departures but that’s solo, not family time and it’s never quite the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday – departures<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve not written anything down about departures but let’s face it nothing too crazy will have happened, it’s just aeroplanes taking off! Blah blah. Whilst back at campsite loading the car I manage to shoot that beautiful monstrosity the Grob 520 as it departs, and the Coaler. I know it’s not a Coaler but to me it is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, that was RIAT 2025. Overall I enjoyed it as ever but the chip, chip chipping away at FRIAT does nark me. The line up initially didn’t seem to have a standaout for me but the Atlantique, Blackhawk, Grob, G91 and Galaxy made it in the end. As a family experience we loved it, my boy came away with some fantastic memories and it has maintained his interest in aviation. However the cots is becoming a problem. We’re fortunate in the fact that we can afford to do full RIAT (just) but it really must be a struggle for some families now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do we think about next year? A new CEO, a new FRIAT stand arrangement, people getting charged \u00a315 per day to park. No doubt more troubling news will come out as we get nearer and nearer to the actual weekend. <as I type this now there is much speculation as to whether or not RIAT 2026 will happen due to the war in Iran<\/em>> And the price, f*ck me. By March we’d forked out \u00a3280 for Kempsford camping, \u00a3330 on my FRIAT and \u00a3190 on their tickets so we are now at \u00a3800 for a family of 3 to spend 4 nights at a campsite and go to an airshow. Throw in petrol and spends over those 4 days and you’re nudging \u00a31500!! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
